The Greenhouse Theater Center is a multi-stage theater building at 2257 N. Lincoln Ave. in Lincoln Park, between Webster and Belden avenues. It is about three blocks from the CTA Fullerton Red, Brown and Purple Line station.
What it’s known for
The building was the original home of the Body Politic Theater and later Victory Gardens Theater. The Wendy and William Spatz Charitable Foundation bought it from Victory Gardens with a commitment to keep it in use as a multi-stage theater, and the Greenhouse Theater Center was founded in 2008. It describes itself as a nonprofit “incubator” for small and mid-size companies, which is where the name comes from.
The center has five stages, plus rehearsal, dressing and office space for resident companies; its rental spaces include Up Main, Down Main, Up Studio, Down Studio and Studio 44. Programming comes from resident companies and independent producers, so a single week can include several different shows. The building is also home to the Trellis Bookstore, which the center calls Chicago’s only used theater bookstore.
