Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder Co. is a restaurant at 2121 N. Clark St. in Lincoln Park, in a narrow Victorian building across the street from the site of the 1929 St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. Albert H. Beaver opened it in April 1972, and it is next door to Riccardo Trattoria.
What it’s known for
The signature dish is the pizza pot pie: scratch-made dough baked over the restaurant’s own sauce and a blend of cheeses. Most tables also start with the Mediterranean bread, and the rest of the menu is made up of oven grinders (baked sandwiches) and salads. The bar serves cocktails, beer and wine.
Inside, wood paneling, low lighting and high-backed booths recall a Prohibition-era speakeasy, and the restaurant says the dark wood furnishings have been kept since it opened. The restaurant lists coverage from Food Network, CBS Chicago, NBC Chicago and Time Out among its press.
