The Park District’s park pages and the City of Chicago’s park-boundary data sometimes give slightly different numbers, for example 0.54 versus 0.58 acres for Noethling Park. We use the park pages. The Park District also publishes no acreage for just the North Avenue-to-Diversey stretch of the lakefront park.
The big one: lakefront Lincoln Park
Lakefront Lincoln Park is Chicago’s largest park, and most of the neighborhood’s open space is in it. The Park District’s page gives several sizes (1,188.62, about 1,200 and 1,118 acres), so “about 1,189 acres” is the safest figure. The park runs north past Diversey, but the stretch that borders the neighborhood holds most of its best-known sights:
- Lincoln Park Zoo, 49 acres, free every day.
- Nature Boardwalk at South Pond, about 12 acres of prairie and wetland at the zoo’s south end, designed by Studio Gang and opened in 2010.
- Lincoln Park Conservatory, 2391 N. Stockton Dr., free with a timed reservation. Next to it is Grandmother’s Garden, a historic flower garden about three blocks long on Stockton Drive.
- Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool, about 3 acres at 125 W. Fullerton Pkwy., open dawn to dusk from mid-April to mid-November. Our post on the Lily Pool has more.
- North Pond Nature Sanctuary, a restored natural area with Friday guided walks run by the Lincoln Park Conservancy. The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum and the North Pond restaurant are nearby.
- North Avenue Beach, 1601 N. DuSable Lake Shore Dr. It’s the neighborhood’s only designated swimming beach, with lifeguards from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. in season. Fullerton has a lakefront promenade, not a swimming beach.
- Diversey Harbor, 2601 N. Cannon Dr. It has 719 powerboat slips, a fuel dock and a two-lane launch.
- Theater on the Lake at Fullerton and the lake, the Lincoln Park Cultural Center at 2045 N. Lincoln Park West, and the Lakefront Trail, which has separate bike and pedestrian paths.

The neighborhood parks: Oz, Wrightwood, Jonquil and Trebes
Only four parks away from the lakefront are bigger than an acre, and they hold most of the neighborhood’s ball fields and courts. Oz Park, the largest at 14.4 acres, has the Tin Man, Scarecrow, Cowardly Lion and Dorothy-and-Toto statues and a full fieldhouse. Wrightwood Park has a junior pool, a track and sand volleyball, and it hosts the Taco & Tequila Fest and World Dumpling Fest. Jonquil Park hosts the Lincoln Park Wine Fest each October. Trebes Park, next to Oscar Mayer Magnet School, has a community garden and bocce.
Mini-parks and playlots
The other 12 parks are each under an acre, and most are playlots on residential blocks. Several are built for small children: Park No. 535 is for ages 5 and under, Privet Park has a slide and tunnel, and Supera Park has a pirate ship. Bauler Park has a pickleball court. Mid-North Park and Eugenie Triangle are “passive” parks with no play equipment. Our family guide to Lincoln Park picks out the best stops for kids.
Where dogs can go off leash
Wiggly Field, in Noethling Park at 2645 N. Sheffield Ave., is the neighborhood’s only official Park District dog-friendly area. The lakefront park has no official dog area between North Avenue and Diversey; the closest lakefront ones are farther north. Dogs need a Park District tag to use a dog-friendly area. Our Lincoln Park dog guide covers tags and rules.
